ICT MANTRA FOR DEVELOPMENT.

ICT MANTRA FOR DEVELOPMENT.

Raymond Kurzweil, researcher in artificial and chairman of Kurzweil applied intelligence wrote “The revolution manifest in this new age-this age of intelligent machines that augment our mental resources will be greater than the radical technological and social changes that have come before. It cannot be stopped. Today’s challenges are to be found in our need to understand it, to learn to live creatively and harmoniously with it, and to harness it to constructive uses.”

It is nearly impossible to escape the effects of Information Communication Technology (ICT) today. Organizations and individuals, from farmers to engineers, are discovering the potential of ICTs to meet their information needs and reach their desired goals.

On a personal level, you may find them beneficial for tasks such as supporting everyday operations such as keeping appointment diaries or writing reports, identifying and solving problems and for decision making.

Even when you don’t see them, ICTs are working behind the scenes------at home, at school, at hospitals, at markets.

The world is changing and increasingly revolving around the dissemination of information and transmission of knowledge. In fact, this is taking place as ICTs are advancing day by day. More than ever before, people in the country, as all over the globe recognize the importance of knowledge and information.

The pace at which ICTs has transformed the transmission of information and knowledge is much of story of new opportunity in the information age. In the recent past years in Malawi, villagers highly depended on high places like anthills to convey messages of both life and death.

Besides the improvements in communication nowadays, it is a usual to see some quarters especially in remote areas still resorting to olden ways of beating drums and blowing whistles in passing messages of wedding, and funeral ceremonies despite inception of modern technologies.

They cannot be blamed for this, as the advancement of these ICTs trends for different reasons has much favoured urban settings than rural areas, and it doesn't need one to be an ICT professional to note this.

Yet that oddity has an unfamiliar side, as such, their appreciation and understanding of ICTs is quite minimal. In most cases it becomes difficult for them to understand that “At a touch of button,” it is possible to stay in touch with those who matters most living outside their locale who needs to be kept abreast with development taking place at home, which then could be a good measure of ICTs success if attained successfully.

But when it becomes a trend, that people who are armed with ICTs skills acquired by going through high learning institution and they are the hopes of their relatives in bringing such facilities at their disposal leave for cities in search of green pastures without passing their then gained knowledge on kinfolks from the length and breadth of their areas when departing, this pose threat in the advancement of ICTs in rural areas as no chances are rightly available for those who are ICTs illiterate to acquire the know how and lucky are the few living in rural settings but equipped in the use of ICTs.

Yamikani Tembo finished his college education in 2004, he pursued a course in Purchasing and Supply. Without any ready employment, to venture into, he is spending most of his time at his rural home of Chiradzulu district, but checks for employment advertisement in the Republic of South Africa almost in every fortnight on the internet.

To do this, he has to travel to Blantyre city to check out the internet at Cyber Cafés. This is not only offering him the chance to search for a job, but also other duties and activities he can do through the internet.

“In my area we have people who have done ICT studies, but have seen their way to cities like Blantyre, supposing with their expertise they had opened internet Cyber cafes at the market center here, before leaving where one could go and do everything one needs related to ICT, I wouldn’t have been troubling myself going to Blantyre” explains Tembo.

However, it is good news to hear of the possibilities of developing telecenters by MACRA at a local level under the theme “ICTs for Sustainable Rural Development (ISRD).” The centers would have telephone, internet, photocopying, television, lamination, photography and fax devices.

Who would deny that inorder for this to happen, NGOs and donor community as a whole must come in to assist in different ways, so as relatives in rural areas also enjoys the benefits of ICTs as their counterparts in urban areas.

Inorder to roll out ICTs in the rural areas, the well wishers should vest in their different resources and not withdrawing their continue support in making ICTs donations such as computers to learning institutions in the country, as said according to Malawi Civil Service ICT policy of 2003 that ICT is one of the fundamental socioeconomic development tools.

Who would dispute the recent vow made by Taiwanese Ambassador to Malawi James Chuang recently after he presented part of a consignment of computer sets from his government to Malawi government that the Republic of China (Taiwan) will assist the Malawi Government's drive to reach out to the rural areas masses with ICT through an intensive annual provision of computers to see the country more technologically advanced in the next 10 years.

ICT OILS WHEELS OF DEVELOPMENT

ICT OILS WHEELS OF DEVELOPMENT

In today’s world, Information Communication Technology (ICT) is the single biggest driver of development. We live in a knowledge based society where virtually way societal issue of consequence is directly linked to advances in Science and Technology that continues to define who we are and how well we live. Equally significant is how we choose to use the knowledge we create. The key is to generate knowledge, not just for its own sake but also for the sake of spurring innovation and then applying at least a portion of that innovation to addressing critical human needs.

After all, we are not only living in a world of unprecedented change, driven largely by Science and Technology, but also confront the stark reality of our everyday life. ICT must not only be used to satisfy human curiosity. They must also be used to help satisfy the basic needs of marginalized citizens.

To borrow the leaf expressed by G8 leaders in a broad statement of intent which they endorsed at the G8 2006 summit held in St. Petersburg , Russia , last July. “We will promote the global innovation society by developing and integrating all three elements of the knowledge triangle (Education, Research and Innovation). We will do so by investing fully in people, skills and research, and by supporting the modernization of education systems to become more relevant to the news of a global based society”.

At this juncture in Malawi, one would not hesitate, but concur with G8 leaders proclamation, looking at the current ICT advances, as gone are the days when people had to rely on top areas sitting there beating drums, resounding trumpets and blowing whistles in announcing important messages of wedding ceremonies, meetings and funerals to the dear ones.

But some quarters especially in remote areas are still using high grounds to supplement the many technologies that have been introduced although it occurs at minimal rates, as mortals both in rural and urban places posses and enjoy using cell phones in this day and age, some indigenous in remote areas are experiencing hurdles in using this device as they cover big distances when the need to get in touch with relatives and friends who are at far places arises as they go to a particular place to find mobile phone network service even though it tends not to be all that effective.

As is evident with a mere look at one of the stories carried in the ICT supplement to The Nation of 31st July 2007 of a picture of a Malawian woman villager wearing a cell phone around her neck is a true significant of ICTs boom in the country.

But great of these modern Information Communication Technology has much favoured the urban settings, putting the rural masses only to use limited communication technologies hence putting their appreciation and understanding of ICT quite trivial.

This oddity has unfamiliar side as many only hears stories of modern technologies like computers without seeing or even using them as these devices are sometimes none existence in their locality.

It is hard to convince a villager that messages of life and death can be conveyed outside their locale to reach the target both far and near in their urgency and entirety by the use of computer connected to internet by sending electronic mail, as people who went through the corridors of high learning institutions to bring such services to their kinfolks after completion of studies are always moving to towns and cities. And this does not require a connoisseur to conclude that villagers will carry on believing that phones are the only answer to fast communication in modern world if this trend continues.

Through the ambitious project of Malawi government of coming up with telecentres at rural level which will fridge telephone, internet, photocopying, television, lamination, photography and fax devices is a right formula in solving this problem.

ICT is a new and exciting area as it offers a lot of unlimited opportunities and it is a wise idea to invest time and energy for harnessing the opportunities, which have the profound positive impact on our lives.

The success tale of a Form 2 secondary school drop out.

THE TALE OF JENGA SUPPORT CENTER AT BOLERO, RUMPHI

If what you do helps someone else achieve something, then you really have accomplished much. And that not money is the real reward of success. Our wise ancestors coined the edge.

Another saying of wisdom by our wise intimates; the heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the right.

After all, you must also cultivate enthusiasm and zeal in your task; otherwise you will sink into mediocrity. And where zeal and skill meet a miracle usually follows.

This came to light three months I arrived at Jenga Support Center at Bolero in Rumphi district in the Northern Region of Malawi.

Situated about 40 kilometers outside Rumphi Trading Center going to the west while braving the dusty and rough road despite being the one that takes multitudes of tourists to Nyika National Park, the strings of villages mainly of mud bricks houses with iron sheets roofs attracts attention of hundreds on lookers who passes by at the end of the day.

While appreciating stunning maize and tobacco gardens dotted all over, is a two roomed wholly roofed with corrugated iron sheets of high quality. The plastered whole building is in white paint and the words; Jenga Support Center at the top written in blue.

If you are one of those who judge people by their appearance, not success of their brains and hands you could be mislead seeing soft spoken Godfery Jenga Gondwe cladding his shoes, trousers both in black color with a crime long sleeves shirt with a necktie that he is man behind the mentioned center.

“I started Jenga Support Center with only one sewing machine way back 1999 after running a small hardware shop for two years right here at Bolero trading center,” explains Gondwe.

Gondwe a very enterprising person he is a man who dreams in colour. This is the man who is the source of economic brainwave to the rural areas of Bolero and across entire Northern region.

Making a kick-start with a single sewing machine in the past recent years he is now a proud owner of a tailoring shop satiated with twenty-eight sewing machines, carpentry and joinery workshops and wedding and fabrication.

“It was my desire late in 90s to help Malawi government in developing the country by opening a vocational trainings skills to help the needy young people and vulnerable groups at the end providing self employments especially in this era where there is a loud cry of unemployment. But at that time I had no resources and no ideas of which buttons to press for assistance,” he says.

That is why the 36 years old father of three children had every reason to call for support from non-governmental organizations and indeed TEVETA itself.

He explained, that so far eighteen youths in Tailoring, and six in Carpentry and Joinery fields had graduated since the inception of the Center and were on scholarship programme offered by Gondwe himself while the rest who had just joined the Center by January 2007 were sponsored by World Vision, (a non-governmental organization).

“Godfrey Jenga Gondwe is the beneficiary of Skills Development Initiative (SDI) programme initiated by TEVETA in 2001, under this programme TEVETA provides training outreach programmes to the youths in order to promote the provision of trainings through enhanced traditional apprenticeship schemes.

The SDI programme which was piloted in Rumphi, Salima, and Mwanza districts from 2001 to 2002 under the Informational Sector Training Programme, youths were trained in different occupation such as Brick Lying, Carpentry And Joinery and Tailoring.

But that was not the formula for solving problems facing the younger generation, unless offering some training within their locality exactly as what TEVETA did to Gondwe who mastered the skills so well as he was the recognized by TEVETA as one of those who could train his fellow locals within the community.

And since 2001 he Center has trained about 372 youths mostly girls from all over the districts in the Northern region.

“I am one amongst the first group of the youths who had benefited from vocational training skills offered at Jenga Support Center and now I have opened a Tailoring Shop at Rumphi Trading Center where am eking money to make my ends meet,” says James Gondwe, who has no relation with Jenga.

However Gondwe laments, lack of materials to give to those who graduates from the Center for a start, Houses to accommodate trainees from far districts and meeting Transportation costs to various places to see how those who have received vocational skills are doing are the major challenges the Center faces.

Visiting the Jenga Support Center one would discover to his amusement that deep in the rural areas there are some Malawians who dream in color. And if people of Gondwe caliber are to be many, fairly recognized and supported the Warm Heart of Africa would completely develop within short years.

It is the wonders of success that could make any person to trek down from where ever he or she is to Bolero to see testimonies of Gondwe.

Jenga Support Center is never short of visitors, at the dawn of the day and as the sun descends down to have itself immersed deep into the far western horizon, parting the land it had shone upon a dozen hours ago into the inevitable darkness, many have different tales to tell about the Center which are true reflections that the success story of a Form 2 secondary school drop out has been herd all over the hills and mountains.

As success can be defined in a variety of ways but all boils down achieving something one set to do or becoming what you want to be. Then it is a fact who can dispute that Gondwe has successed.

Where are we heading to?

Where are we heading to

Am I right of hearing a News Presenter reading news story that a 50, years old man has been sentenced to five years Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) for defiling a 14 years old girl? The answer is YES. If so, then why?

Reading through our county’s daily papers one is bound to read stories of evil such as defilement, rape and witchcraft stories which was unheard of in the past recent years.

These are some of the stories making headlines and a day can’t go by without being welcomed at home from a tiresome day hearing such stories either on a news radio or television why not being told by your relations.

One is puzzled why this has come to be the order of the day and why on increase? Attending to a court sitting one would not get surprised hearing such cases toppling the Court Registry files. If you happen to attend to the court proceedings other, don’t get astonished seeing people in the court dock wearing volumes of smiling faces while others laughing on top of their voices as if they were in a hall watching a drama or at a beer joint but no it is in a courtroom where there is need for a total silence at time when judge, interpretor, and a offender exchanges words.

I happened to spare my good time the other day, attending a court sitting. A 52 year old man had defiled a 6 year old toddler.

When the judge asked him why he had committed a such abominable sin on earth as he was a married man and issues of having sexual intercourse wasn’t a problem to him as he could even come up with a time table of having it with her marriage partner on daily basis if he wishes.

The reasons the man gave was that he was tired with his poverty status he was in and he had searched for ways on how he could get out of it for ages and the last formula which came in his mind was to ask his friends who used to ply the same trade of charcoal selling he was doing, but over the blue moon they had found their much talked about Manna from Heavens and are doing great presently. They advised him to seek way to a famous witch doctor within his community who had assisted them, and he could do the same if he ask for it. He really did as friends had advised him which also meant agreeing to all what would come from this magician man who told him inhuman directive of engaging himself in sexual acts with a female kid of 5 years old as solution to his request which he didn’t hesitate as this was the thing he was to do if he was to haul himself out from the poverty he was trapped in.

And he told the judge that if it was not that of the witchdoctor he had consulted to assist him in meeting his riches he couldn’t have done that. And begged the court to be lenient with him when passing the sentence on him as he said was taking care of his seven children and five orphaned children.

Being told the reasons, the judge slapped him with fives years Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL).

Stories like this one are hard for one to believed but they are really taking roots in our country Malawi. And no good convincing reasons are given by the culprits. Believe me it is responsibility of all Malawians in doing whatever solutions which could make such types of stories to an end or else it will soon fall on us or our daughters or sons.

Such kind of stories makes one to wonder: Where is Malawi heading to? How will be the situation like in near future?

Kids of less than a year are being defiled by their own caretakers. These have of so late mad Mothers in Malawi being afraid to leave their kids with male partners when ever they go away even if the know male partner. And if situation rises that call them not to do otherwise but to leave their toddler behind there are not at peace, thinking what has happened behind their back to their brood. And you may agree with me that such kinds of thoughts have the potential of dwindling ones productivity in one area or the other.

I tend to ask myself at all time: what should be the everlasting solution to these problem amongst us outlined above? Are evil deeds of defiling young children be solution for ending ones poverty? These cases have been bemoaned by some non-governmental organization in the country and indeed by the government itself but I come to believe that they are fall on closed ears of the listeners as they continue being heard.

Cases are heard almost daily of a man / woman having sexual affairs with his / her own offer spring in the name of getting rich.

Why is this taking part in the Hearts of Malawians? Who is to be blamed? All these are expectations questions in need of answers.

Where are we heading to?

THE JOY OF BEING HONEST !

THE JOY OF BEING HONEST.
“Honest” There is something about this word that brings to mind such notions as truth, clarity, sincerity and trust. These are important building blocks which happen to be conveyor belts that any and all relationships must be built upon, hence achieving happy families, societies and nations.

From the honesty of a nation or its political leaders to the honesty of a little child speaking to its grandparents plays a greater part in our everyday lives. For most of us, if not all, the word “Honest” has been neglected deliberately either for our sake, relatives or friends for gains or for other reasons best known to ourselves, at one time or another. At the outset of every dishonesty we make in our daily course we feel guilty conscious of what others will look at us if our dishonesty has revealed on stage.

At the start of every dishonesty we make, we tend to look at our back, checking if anyone is watching us, if none is there, we continue with our dishonesty act. And neglecting also to gaze to above where there is “The Almighty God” who sees us at all times and anywhere. After doing the dishonest action we tend to ask our self: what shall happen if our fellow beings realize what we have done that? A sense of guilty conscious starts building in us while at the same time; we try to find out ways on how to get rid of questions which keeps nagging now and again in our mind, in most cases regrets follows.

Yet for others, it is time to go deep in searching methods how best in making the dishonesty they had made unknown, whilst others, gathers courage for the outcome results of their dishonesty. It is in this light that they would want to continue accomplishing other dishonesty acts they have not or have failed to do before, hence landing into big troubles beyond their dishonesty ways, they had, had being doing behind backstage costing many to suffer. And all the meanings attached to “Honest” goes away and in most cases it is much difficult to revamp the lost glory.

What happens when we loose “Honesty” as a leader, parent, community, and as a nation as a whole? What happens if no one believes us when we speak or proclaim a statement? Doubt, disbelief, suspicion and distrust follows in.

Sadly’ if we behave as we don’t used to, brings suspicion, disbelief, doubt and distrust by our friends, relatives, neighbors so forth so on. And all of these produce anxiety and bad feeling in the bottom of our stomach. This stake trouble inside us is experienced by ourselves at any time, anywhere and we are deprived.

The inner peace gift given by Our Lord Jesus Christ during our time of birth we no longer experience it, which is not suppose to be the case, as by our true nature we are peaceful beings, and if we are not aligning with this we become restless.

Coming back to the topic in discussion, “Honest” we usually loose our honesty slowly over a period of time. It does not go away all at once but gradually. Therefore we need to be watchful of our ways. We can erode the honest ground we stand on by repeated dishonest speech and acts, soon it becomes a habit or way of life for us.

We can get used to tell little lies, cheating here and there and before we know it, we can’t tell the difference between a lie and the truth. Sometimes we can get caught in a spider’s web of lies. First we tell one lie, then we need to tell two in order to cover up the first, and then we need to tell four to cover up the two and so and so on.

One aspect of humanity is that we seldom worry about the present, but rather the past (why did I do it?) and future (what kind of future will I make?) bothers us. Due to the dishonesty ways we had made at one point, we fail to put our energies in the present moment to ensure a better future. If we learn the art of living this present moment in an honest manner we do not need to worry about the future. When you are passionate with your egoistic self you achieve a state of bliss. And more you need to churn out the best of yourself always on this which would make you not to be at honest.

You may have planned good projects to accomplish in your life, but as long as you are not in harmony with your inner self due to the dishonesty tunnels dishonesty you are undergoing through, you will not be successful in whatever are your goals.

There should never be a conflict within you on whether to be honest in whatever you do or the opposite be true. And that is the beauty and power of you divine self. It is a force inside you not from outside that tells you to be honesty in whatever you do. That perfect alignment happens between your body, mind and soul and imperfect union you achieve result.

May you all in exploring your self and make yourself happy and peaceful by not allowing dishonesty be part of your life while letting your honest deeds spreading to others.

Together We Achieve.

TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE.

Interpretation is a game of perspectives. Fair can be foul and foul can be fair. However, the validity of any interpretation is fairly judged upon the analysis of the quality of reason engaged. Hence, my BLOGSPOT, professional and objectively will be taking you by hand in presenting news stories of wide range and other interesting thing as they happened with neither ingredients nor preservatives. As regard to interpretation; it is at your disposal.

As 2006 was exiting, entering 2007; they were many pending questions begging for answers such as; How, Why, When, Which, Nations has / have made and failed to make strides on issues like Education, Social and Cultural life, Gender, Economy, Environment, Civil society and Churches, Politics, Food Security, Religion, and Freedom and Democracy. These questions were in the offing both in African continent and in the Western world.

Issues of this nature reminds me of a story of a village young boy toddler who had set out on a journey with his Grandmother and father. As they travel minutes turn to hours and hours to days, kilometers to miles. Then weeks to months and years pass by. They pass through plains hills, rivers, lakes and mountains. They cross thick forests and deserts. Yet they do not reach their destination.

As they were on their way, the Grandmother dies, the boy reaches maturity and his Grandfather gets older. Yet the journey continues.

As the Grandfather nears death, the boy turned manhood. He asks the Grandfather: years have gone by, we have travelled a long distance, we lost our beloved ones, and yet you are about to kick the bucket; when are we going to reach our desired destination?

The Grandfather answers; “My Grandson, in Life and in Death, we are on a journey. Let us make a best use of every moment of this journey.”

“Life is not ones sweet song,” The old ancestors coined the edge. If one would ask: When Why, and How will the troubles of wars, HIV and AIDS, unemployment, dwindling education standards being continue experienced in a good part of the entire world will come to an end?

If solutions are not found to solve such mentioned above tribulations different types of problems are faced by Nations and to the terrible, populace suffers.

It is to my point of view, that those bad happenings which have a greater bad impact on Human Beings could be stopped and why not reducing could only be achieved only if people work together in finding answers to these problems.

Let my share with you my personal problem I had faced the other day: There was a moment when this dream of coming up with my own BLOGSPOT was a mere nightmare and hopes of its mechanization were won out, due to the technical problem I had, had with the Browser on my internet.

Due to the endurance, zeal and interest endowed I posted a need for support to colleagues on our discussion group, finally the solution to the hurdle that had given me a hectic headache was found and I continued with my project, which has come into fruition. And raised my thumbs up to all the people who had worked technically tiresly for mechanization of my dream.

If I can pose a question: What could have been the out come, if I did not had involved any body in finding the solution to the problem of an example I have given above?

The same is happening in our daily lives, we are faced with some problems which ourselves have failed to solve them but our friends and relatives can solve them and we sit on them. If we allow this to be part of our life we will always not succeed in what we want. Let say no to this and start consulting others for help.

TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE.
